As fine as or finer than cashmere, each saddle blanket is a natural, one of a kind creation, beautifully hand woven, deep in the heart of Texas. Alpaca Fiber (Wool) Attributes Stronger than sheep wool Lighter weight than sheep Does not “itch” like sheep Does not absorb odors Naturally wicks moisture Collects less horse hair than sheep wool Very easy to clean You may have seen from what few photos are on our \"work in progress" website that they are single layer blankets similar to a Navajo but are much, much thicker; all of our blankets are made from natural alpaca colors. They are hand-woven from rovings vs machined from yarn thus affording extreme durability, and they hold their shape much better than sheep wool blankets. Alpaca wool does not contain lanolin like sheep, consequently, alpacas do not smell and the blankets do not absorb odors as badly as the sheep blankets. Because they are so much lighter in weight, they dry tons faster and are much easier to throw around from horse to horse. And to top it off, alpaca wool fibers are slick, whereas sheep wool fibers have barbs (making sheep wool itchy). With that in mind, the alpaca blankets do not collect horse hair nearly as fast as sheep blankets. The blankets provide great cushion and conform so completely to a horse's shape, unless you are doing a lot of pulling, roping, often times it's the only blanket needed. It will become even softer and “felt” a bit as it molds to the horse’s unique shape. It will naturally maintain its compression, thermal and moisture wicking properties. The blankets sell for $250 without leathers and $275 with Calvin Allen leathers. If anyone will be attending the World Championship Ranch Rodeo in Amarillo in November, my husband and I we will be there as vendors, and the blankets were selected as team awards for the finals. They are very popular with the ranching industry because of the great cushion and protection for the horse's back, the extreme durability, they are so light weight and dry so quickly. Least we forget their great natural eye appeal. They are very handsome blankets!
